about

Banana Skin Central is a totally unique track - it enters straight into a stuttering, tense groove, courtesy of Ric Elsworth on drums. Twice, the main melody opens out into a section featuring thick, angular synth chords and a pulsating bass line from Tiago Coimbra, interspersed with Tom O’Grady’s Rhodes. The track builds to a climax and then releases as a Rhodes solo gently begins. The intensity increases as the solo climbs and climbs - the Oberheim chords reappear - *this* is the true climax of the song. From that moment on, the track grooves under a superb tenor solo from Alex Hitchcock. This is the kind of track you wish would never end - and it doesn’t - it fades as the perpetual groove keeps lifting. What about the title? Well, the name was coined when we first rehearsed this track - at that time, the middle section was in 17/8 and was proving very difficult to nail without tripping up - hence ‘Banana Skin Central’.
